Students show red cards in protest of corruption, traffic rules violation

Shawdesh Desk:

Protesting students from multiple educational institutions of the capital again took to the streets for safe roads and a few other demands in Dhaka on Saturday.

They took position on the sidewalk near Rampura Bridge at around 11:00am and showed red cards in protest of irregularities and corruption on the roads.

The protesters said that they will hold a symbolic funeral procession in Dhaka’s Shahbagh and form human chains across the country on Sunday to press home our nine-point demands.

Meanwhile, students across the country will carry out peaceful human chain programmes at their convenience, they said.

Students have been demonstrating on the streets to press home a number of demands, including a concession on public transport fares for them after the rate was hiked.  They have been blocking roads in parts of Dhaka over the past few weeks in protest. The protests intensified in the wake of the deaths of two students in road accidents in Gulistan and Rampura in the capital.

Bus owners in Dhaka conditionally agreed to reduce the fares by half for students but protesters rejected it and pledged to continue with their movement.

Their demands include a discounted fare for students across the country, not just in Dhaka, and for all hours.
